Horror Def<> Horror is a film genre that seeks to elicit fear or disgust in its audience for entertainment purposes.
Using the 2 main movies that would most closely link to my own ideas for "The woods" I decided to use both Bird Box and The Ritual as my reference points for my genre research.
Both these films are inundated with examples of what makes the horror genre unique, using techniques like jump scares, intense music designed to scare audience members and beautiful transitions that put us in the perspective of the protagonists in the very film itself.
As an example I will reference a scene in "The Ritual" which is set near the beginning of the plot on their first sign of the paranormal in a cabin.
The scene starts with very poor conditions, being gloomy, dark as well as raining with very little light. The only one being emitted by their handheld torches and the brief flashes on lightning, they break into a seemingly abandoned loft, shown by the characters with their torches glazing over the dust and grime has built up, their curses and complaints also showing their emotional distress as they witness the weird events and creepy environment they've put themselves in. Truly showcasing how horror can also be slow built and not particularly scary but still immensely un-nerving.
